Do the SchoolSat SpeedTest !!!

Version 2 (updated 15 January 2003)

Please carry out both tests immediately one after the other.

SpeedTest 1

Click on the link http://www.web-sat.com/files/1mb.bin: the following message will appear on your screen:

This message tells you that you are about to save a 1 MB file, called 1mb.bin, to your computer. This file is harmless (and useless as a matter of fact) and created to perform speed tests like this one. Click on “Save” and then immediately the next message will appear:

Now you can select the place on your computer where you will save the file you are about to download. The place doesn’t really matter. However, it is most convenient to save it on the Desktop because that will make it easy to remove (simply by deleting) the file after your test. Once you have selected where to put the file, click on the Save button and the following screen appears:

This screen appears ONLY when you have not removed (deleted) the old download from a previous speed test. It is OK to click here on Yes, the old file will be overwritten and the speed test will be carried out.

The following screen appears now:

Make sure that the box in front of “Close this dialog box when download completes” is unchecked, this will allow the message to stay up on the screen after the download and provide you with the result we are looking for: see the next screenshot:

Now, note the Transfer rate (in the example above it is 14.7) and write that down in the box on the web page for the “Result Speedtest 1”

Voila, now please proceed to Speedtest 2:

Speedtest 2

Click on the link http://homepage.tinet.ie/~leslie/testpage/testlrge.htm and you will see the following page appear:

And then after a few seconds or so automatically this page disappears and a new page pops up that will look more or less as the following:

Please note the speed indication, you will find this indicated as a number expressed in cps (see graph above, beside the red bar), and fill it into the Speedtest web page under Result Speedtest 2.

Complete the form with date and hour of test plus your school name, press the submit button on the bottom of the page and Bob’s your uncle.

If you prefer to send your results in a different manner, please do so via FirstClass (you can post it there in the technology conference) or via email (mathy.vanbuel@atit.be), whatever you have handy.

Again, you can do this test whenever you think of it. The more test results we have, the better. Many thanks for your help.
