Gairmscoil
Mhic Diarmada, Arrain Mor IslandThe
school was founded in 1982. It began with only 23 pupils
and 2 teachers but this number has now grown to approximately
46 pupils at present. The Headmistress is Mrs. Poilin
Ni Chomaic, the teachers involved in the Schoolsat project
are Daniel Doherty and Fred Gallagher. The school was
founded as an all Irish school, as a result of this
the main aim of the school is that each pupil will be
able to converse and communicate through the Irish language
on the completion of their education.
Arrain Mor is a small island situated three miles from
the coast of County Donegal. Its area stretches seven
square miles (three miles in length and three in breadth).
The island has 700 inhabitants and possesses some spectacular
walks and cliff scenery. There is also an abundance
of wildlife and many different species of fish in the
surrounding waters. The island has much to offer it's
visitors. It's rugged beauty, it's beaches and cliffs.
The cliffs are on the Atlantic facing
side of the island, where some of the views quite literally,
take your breath away. Aside from Tourism, the area has
thriving Fishing and Agricultural industries. Even with
these, the Island's population has been depleted to just
over half of what it was in the mid-1800s; immigration
and urban migration have proven tempting for its younger
community.
